Agriculture Programs

IFFS agriculture programs grow a healthy, just, and sustainable local food system. We work side by side with community to build food security by providing training and education in agricultural skills and opportunities for micro-enterprise development.

AGRICULTURE TRAINING PROGRAMS

  • Teaching Farms - We engage children and adults in learning about where our food comes from by inviting volunteers to farm with us. Volunteers work on all aspects of growing and selling fresh produce. Our sustainably-grown fruits, vegetables, and protein are sold to local restaurants, at local Farmers Markets, and distributed to families in need. For more information contact Kay at FarmsandGardens@FoodShuttle.org
  • Farm Tours and Education - Want to learn about farming and our food system? We host workshops on soil building, local food micro-enterprises, aquaponics, raising goats and chickens, beekeeping, hoophouse season extension, permaculture, composting, vermicomposting, large scale and small plot intensive farming, and more!  Need a speaker? Want to tour the Food Shuttle Teaching Farm or Urban Ag programs? Contact our Farm Educator Sun Butler for information about workshops, interning, tours, and learning while you volunteer. Sun@FoodShuttle.org
  • Youth Agriculture Training Program - We train youth and young adults in urban gardening and on-farm skills; marketing and business techniques; food system and food justice engagement; and cooking and nutrition education. For more information contact Ricky@FoodShuttle.org
  • Urban Agriculture - We hire youth from food insecure neighborhoods to establish urban gardens while training them in how to generate revenue by growing food. For more information about the program contact Urban Ag Program Manager Lara@FoodShuttle.org To join the Urban Ag Crew, contact Urban Ag Educator Maurice@FoodShuttle.org.
  • Community Gardens - Through innovative partnerships and initiatives, we empower community members to take back control of their food choices and lead healthier lives by increasing their access to fresh produce and teaching nutrition and culinary skills. Community gardens also provide opportunities for leadership development, community building, and physical activity. Every garden has a unique connection to the surrounding community and a role to play in fighting hunger. For information on Durham Community gardens, contact Abbey@FoodShuttle.org. For information on Wake Community Gardens, contact Lara@FoodShuttle.org
  • Growing Power Regional Outreach Training Center (ROTC) - With Longview School, we host annual urban agriculture workshops in partnership with MacArthur Genius Award winner Will Allen's internationally recognized urban agriculture organization Growing Power, LLC. Workshops are for youth, established farmers, and community members. We are the only ROTC in the country with a specific focus on youth! For more information contact Shosha@FoodShuttle.org
    • Plant the Pavement! Inter-Faith Food Shuttle officially kicked off our "Plant The Pavement!" workshop series, with both youth and community events running November 8 and 9th at Longview School and our new Hoke Street Training Center in Raleigh Nov. 10-11th.
        • Look for more Plant The Pavement! workshops coming soon!
  • Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training, United Piedmont (CRAFT-UP)  CRAFT-UP is a membership-based coalition of new and established farmers dedicated to creating a more just and sustainable food system in Central NC. CRAFT-UP farmers work together to forge an active learning community in which mentor farmers share their time, talents, and experience with beginning farmers through regular field days, workshops, and social events. Established farms, new farmers, and "farm curious" individuals are all welcome! For more information contact Shosha@FoodShuttle.org

OUR VALUES:
  • Working from neighborhood to neighborhood, we are building a healthy, local food system grounded in the principles of urban agriculture and community food security. Each city block has the potential to grow fresh food and all community members have the right to access sufficient, safe, and nutritious food grown in a way that promotes the health of people, the planet, and the community. Our approach is deeply rooted in community and uses the power of relationships to build local food security

  • We teach sustainable, low-risk, low-input production methods, based on intensive, diversified production and on-farm nutrient cycling. Our farming model has a lower cost of entry and higher profit margins than conventional agriculture, and is commercially viable on a much smaller scale, including in urban settings.

  • We empower youth to re-imagine and re-create the food system in a way that actively benefits their families and communities through green jobs and access to fresh, nutritious food.

VOLUNTEERING

We have volunteer opportunities at our Food Shuttle Teaching Farm in Raleigh. We welcome individuals, families, classes, and work groups! Contact Kay Coleman at FarmsandGardens@FoodShuttle.org if you're interested.
