About 20 years ago, Maureen (Micki) Alexander used to volunteer with Wake Relief, helping to pack boxes of food for those who turned to the agency to help stave off the threat of hunger. She readily remembers the relief she and the other volunteers felt when the trucks from Inter-Faith Food Shuttle would show up at Wake Relief with deliveries of fresh vegetables, meat, bread, and non-perishable food items to help fill those boxes for families in need. That was the beginning of Micki’s relationship with the Food Shuttle.
Today, Micki can count herself among the Food Shuttle’s generous supporters. This holiday season, Micki decided that, in lieu of gifts that no one really needs, she would make a significant donation to Inter-Faith Food Shuttle in honor of her family members. They all thought it was a great idea! “I love the Food Shuttle because they do a little bit of everything. That’s especially important right now,” says Micki.
Micki Alexander is a native of Raleigh. She attended William Peace University, Meredith College, and North Carolina State University, and has been widowed twice. Her stepson is a Raleigh police lieutenant. She spent many years as a successful interior designer and committed volunteer for such organizations as Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, Rex Hospital and Raleigh Fine Arts. She’s also a very talented singer, lending her voice to the Cardinal Singers.
Micki believes that, especially in this time of COVID-19, it’s essential to support the Food Shuttle and its mission of ending hunger. “It’s unfathomable that so many people are hungry in this nation of so much wealth. The disadvantaged, the frontline workers, those who’ve lost their jobs—there is so much need. The Food Shuttle provides food. They teach cooking and nutrition. They grow gardens. They do so much to help those in need. They’re just so great!” It is only through the support of donors and volunteers like Micki that the Food Shuttle can continue these efforts. With more families than ever turning to the Food Shuttle, the support of our partners is more important than ever.
