Most people never expect to experience hunger. It often feels like something distant, something you’d be prepared for or something that happens only to others. Yet across our community, hunger often begins in ways that feel all too familiar: a sudden medical diagnosis, a lost job, a sick child, an unexpected repair that drains what little savings a family has managed to build.
Life can change quickly, and when it does, even households that once felt stable can find themselves struggling to keep food on the table. In those moments, when the refrigerator is empty and the next paycheck is already stretched thin, families are left wondering where they can turn to.
That’s where Inter-Faith Food Shuttle steps in.
For our neighbor Sarah, everything changed when her husband was diagnosed with a serious illness. Almost overnight, the income their family relied on disappeared. With two young children at home and medical bills beginning to pile up, Sarah did everything she could to keep things afloat. She picked up two part-time jobs, carefully budgeting every dollar while trying to maintain a sense of normalcy for her children.
Still, there were moments when it simply wasn’t enough.
One afternoon, Sarah’s oldest child came home from school with a flyer about the Food Shuttle’s School Choice Pantry located just steps away from the classroom. Through the pantry, Sarah was able to access healthy groceries and make sure food stayed on the table and was able to spend her money where her family needed it the most in those moments. Her family navigated one of the most difficult chapters of their lives but the Food Shuttle promised to keep food on their table no matter what.
Stories like Sarah’s are more common than many people realize. High grocery costs, recent shifts in federal food assistance, and other life circumstances have reduced some of the safety nets families once relied on, meaning more of our neighbors are turning to the Food Shuttle for support.
Every day, the Food Shuttle works to ensure that when life takes an unexpected turn, our community has somewhere to turn for help. Through our programs, we are able to provide fresh, nutritious food to families across our region while preserving the dignity of those we serve.
This spring, we are working to raise $350,000 to ensure we can continue responding to the growing need in our community. Thanks to a $100,000 matching gift from the Biogen Foundation and North Raleigh United Methodist Church, every dollar donated will go twice as far.
Hunger often arrives uninvited. Together, we can make sure help does too. Give today at foodshuttle.org/spring5
