IFFS believes Nutrition Education is crucial to empowering people to meet their own food needs and growing a just and sustainable local food system that feeds everyone healthy, nutritious food.
Sometimes it feels like healthy eating and budget shopping just don’t mix with the holiday season. Our Nutrition Education Division is working hard to dispel that myth with Cooking Matters at the Store tours held between November 7th – December 12th , featuring healthy makeovers of favorite holiday recipes! We are currently recruiting participants in partnership with agencies such as Catholic Parish Outreach, Urban Ministries, and our Mobile Market sites.
These grocery store tours are geared toward holiday cooking traditions, helping participants keep to their goal of eating healthfully over the coming months. Each store tour kick offs with a tasting of one of the Food Shuttle’s favorite seasonal dishes, accompanied by recipes. We also share tips on how to take a family favorite and make it more healthy. Nutritious food and holiday celebrations can go hand-in-hand!
Try these makeover tips:
- When baking, swap out some of the oil with naturally-sweet applesauce or a mashed banana
- Fat-free plain Greek yogurt is a great substitute for butter, sour cream, or mayonnaise
- Reduce sodium intake by using salt-free canned beans in your green-bean casserole
Our Nutrition Education team shows that eating well and staying healthy are both easy and delicious, every day of the year.
