Next time you’re shopping at your local Harris Teeter store and your cashier asks if you’d like to “round up” at checkout, don’t be so quick to pass up the opportunity. That small change adds up to make a big difference in efforts to end hunger in our community. Harris Teeter recently made a $222,088 donation to Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, a gift “rounded up” from all those smaller contributions made at the checkout counter during the month of January 2022.
Harris Teeter, Inc. has long been a supporting partner of the Food Shuttle. This most recent gift was raised through the Backpack Boosters Round Up Campaign. Their annual Harvest Feast campaign, which also raises funds through check out donations, brings in over a million dollars, company-wide each year before being distributed to organizations, including the Food Shuttle. Over the last 17 years of partnership, Harris Teeter, Inc. has donated over $1.1 million dollars to the Food Shuttle through cash gifts and account credit, which allows the Food Shuttle to order foods that we would otherwise be unable to source, giving us greater flexibility in food supplies.
“The number of hardworking families, including children, seniors and veterans, within our communities who do not know when they will have their next meal, is astonishing,” said Danna Robinson communication manager for Harris Teeter. “Many of our food bank partners are facing record numbers of requests for assistance due to COVID-19, which is why it is so important to Harris Teeter to provide a convenient way for shoppers to give back.”
Thanks to support from Harris Teeter associates and customers and programs such as Harvest Feast and Backpack Boosters, the Food Shuttle will continue to “round up” innovative ways to feed, teach, and grow a hunger free community.
