Lottie Moore is well known among the residents of The Oaks community in North Raleigh, as well she should be. Lottie has been Resident Council President of the Oaks Community of the Raleigh Housing Authority since 1992 and has spent the better part of the last three decades doing all she can to improve the lives of the 170 or so people who live there, as well as residents throughout public housing communities. A big part of that effort has been strengthening the relationship between public housing communities and Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. Whether it’s a Mobile Market, afterschool snacks, Grocery Bags for Seniors, annual back-to-school supplies, nutrition classes for families living on a tight budget, or turkeys and all the trimmings at Thanksgiving—the connection between The Oaks and the Food Shuttle runs deep and makes a world of difference for the families of the communities it serves.
When Lottie Moore ran into some personal difficulty a while back, members of the staff at Inter-Faith Food Shuttle stepped in to help. Miss Lottie was going through some health issues when her apartment home at The Oaks was severely damaged by fire. She was left with virtually nothing. Current and former Food Shuttle team members took matters into their own hands and started rounding up furnishings and household goods for her. Food Shuttle staff members who had worked with Lottie Moore for a number of years with her various outreach programs started calling and showing up with items and assistance. She settled in and, despite her illness, resumed her activities as caretaker for her community and others.
Now, Lottie Moore spends most of her time in her lovely, refurbished home, as her illness has left her spent. She is currently under hospice care, but still finds a way to look after the needs of her neighbors. Recently, she reached out to Elizabeth Rodgers, Agency Relations Manager at the Food Shuttle, and told her that she wanted to express her gratitude to the Food Shuttle staff for all that they had done for her over the years and in her time of need. She recently met with Food Shuttle President and CEO, L. Ron Pringle, and recorded a video sharing her journey with the Food Shuttle and her deep gratitude for the partnership she has enjoyed with the organization. “I didn’t think that sending a card was appropriate. I didn’t think that sending an email was appropriate,” she shared with Ron Pringle. “From my heart, I wanted to look at your face and tell you ‘thank you’, because it took all of you to make it happen.” The video recording was sent out to the entire Food Shuttle staff so that everyone could receive Miss Lottie’s sincere and moving message of thanks.
