Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Carol Hoy

by | Aug 18, 2026 | Volunteer

Carol Hoy (pictured in the middle) is a name that just about everyone at Inter-Faith Food Shuttle knows. Since joining us as a Farm volunteer in 2020, she has contributed more than 1,100 volunteer hours. She is known for her bright smile, warm and welcoming personality, and unwavering work ethic.

Carol was born and raised in the Washington, D.C., metro area, where she worked in technical customer support in the international business field. Her career gave her the opportunity to travel around the world, exposing her to communities experiencing food insecurity and limited access to essential resources. Those experiences sparked a passion for understanding and combating hunger, both in the United States and across the globe.

When Carol retired in 2020, she knew she wanted to stay active while giving back to her community. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she began volunteering at the Food Shuttle Farm, where her passion for combating food insecurity found a home. Since then, she has become one of our most dedicated volunteers, spending countless hours each week doing the “dirty work” in the fields while building meaningful friendships with fellow volunteers and staff. One of her favorite parts of volunteering is welcoming new volunteers and helping them feel like part of the Farm community.

While Carol remains a dedicated Farm volunteer, she has also shared her time and talents across other Food Shuttle programs. She plays an essential role in planning our annual Evening at the Farm event, serving as the head of the decorations committee. Her creativity, attention to detail, clear communication, and genuine hospitality have made a lasting impact on both the event and our team. We truly couldn’t bring an event like this to life without her support.

When she’s not at the Farm, Carol enjoys spending time with her family and trying to keep up with her seven lovely grandchildren. She also enjoys going for walks, swimming, and cooking.

When asked to share a piece of life advice, Carol said, “Take the time to show up. Show up if someone is depending on you. Show up for your loved ones, for your community, and, most importantly, for yourself.

Those words reflect the way Carol lives every day. Through her dedication, kindness, and willingness to serve, she has made the Food Shuttle a stronger, more connected community.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to give back, join us at the Farm. There’s a good chance you’ll meet Carol and we promise you’ll be glad you did.
