Grocery Bags Provide Support for our Seniors

“It brightens everyone’s day. Thank you to everyone for thinking of our senior community.”

“Thank you. I enjoy receiving the food every month, it saves me money at the grocery store.”

“Thank you so much! This helps me more than you know.”

For a lot of us, a bag full of produce is typical of every trip to the grocery store. However, for seniors with lack of mobility, income and transportation, it can be a true lifeline.

In North Carolina 18% of seniors are struggling with hunger and food insecurity.  Our Grocery Bags for Seniors program attacks this problem by providing a monthly bag of produce with donated carrots, potatoes, onions, apples and oranges plus dried beans, rice and pasta, as available.

Seniors face unique challenges that put them at a risk for malnutrition including financial constraints, poor health, poor dentition, limited mobility, lack of adequate transportation, social isolation and cognitive decline.

Our Grocery Bag program will serve 288,000 meals by the end of 2018. This year, the Food Shuttle is adding value by implementing health education with the bags. Our Community Health Education team matches healthy recipe cards with the produce and will host on-site workshops and cooking demos at interested partner senior housing communities.

This is all an effort for the Food Shuttle to become one of the leading local organizations on senior hunger – tackling the problem holistically and expanding our reach. The nation’s senior population is expected to double by 2050 and we need to be ready. Join us by volunteering or donating today and let’s make a difference for our at-risk parents and grandparents.
