Reflecting on MLK Day of Service: Honoring the Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

We are honored to share that on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, Inter-Faith Food Shuttle partnered with IBM and United Way of the Greater Triangle for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Hosted at IBM headquarters in Durham, the annual MLK Day of Service was a day where the community came together to give back to our neighbors.

The Food Shuttle helped coordinate an assembly line style of packing to assist the IBM volunteers in creating boxes efficiently. A total of 130 volunteers worked effortlessly to pack boxes with fresh produce, proteins, and pantry staples made to feed a family of four. The produce included carrots, onions, chicken, peanut butter, canned vegetables, tuna, canned fruit, and other items. After hours of packing, a total of 7,192 lbs. of food was sorted through to assemble a grand total of 1,006 boxes! That is 1,006 families who will be eating a nutritious meal thanks to this event.

Thanks to the wonderful partnership with IBM and United Way of the Greater Triangle, we are able to amplify the impact we make in our community. We could not be prouder of the work that went into making this MLK Day of Service such a success.

In celebration of our MLK Day of Service, we want to take the time to remember the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. He had a vision of a world that was equal and just, as he boldly advocated for economic justice and civil rights. Within this desire for an equal world, he worked tirelessly to fight hunger and poverty for all. It was one of his many dreams that having access to food was a fundamental human right.

In a speech given in 1967 titled ‘Where Do We Go From Here?” MLK said:

“Why should there be hunger and privation in any land, in any city, at any table when man has the resources and the scientific know-how to provide all mankind with the basic necessities of life?”

Here at the Food Shuttle, we honor the work Martin Luther King, Jr did in fighting hunger and poverty. We believe no person should have to worry about where their next meal will be coming from. Through our core pillars: Feed, Teach, and Grow, we strive every day to continue MLK’s legacy and give back to our community.
