Volunteers provide crucial support to Inter-Faith Food Shuttle’s mission to feed, teach, grow and cultivate. Our work is not possible without them. As a volunteer, there are many different areas that you can get involved in depending on your interest and availability. Highlighted below are just a few of our areas of need. For more information on volunteer opportunities, visit foodshuttle.galaxydigital.com
FEED: Our BackPack Buddies program provides school children who are experiencing food insecurity with kid-friendly, pre-packed bags of nutritious food for the weekend. We deliver backpacks to over 2,500 kids weekly at 70+ partner schools across our seven-county service area.
Volunteers can support our BackPack Buddies program by working a shift on the road to deliver backpacks to various sites. We ask our volunteers to pass a Motor Vehicle and Background check to permit them to drive our staff vehicles to and from the schools. All routes begin at either our Raleigh Warehouse or Child Food Hub – Durham Warehouse. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, please contact Emily at emily@foodshuttle.org or (919) 390-1968. Volunteers should be able to commit once a week between 8 am — 1 pm.
TEACH: Inter-Faith Food Shuttle’s Community Health Education department is seeking talented individuals who are passionate about using their acting or voice-over skills to help us create educational videos aimed at addressing hunger and promoting community health. We are looking for volunteers with experience in theater, acting or voice-over work to help us produce engaging and effective educational content. Your skills will be instrumental in bringing our educational messages to life by making them more accessible and impactful.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please reach out to Kylee McCombs, Director of Community Health and Nutrition, at kylee@foodshuttle.org with a brief overview of your experience and availability. Your skills could make a lasting impact on our community!
GROW: Gardens For Everyone provides people with fresh, nutritious produce right outside their door by building a raised-bed garden box. As a volunteer, you will help build raised-bed garden boxes at recipients’ homes, and you don’t have to be a building expert to help out! You will learn all the skills you need through the guidance of our staff and experienced volunteers. All volunteers should be comfortable using the tools and lumber needed to make a raised garden bed and must be willing to meet staff at the recipient’s home. Volunteers must be 16 years old or older. For more information, visit the Gardens For Everyone page.
CULTIVATE: Volunteers who work at the front desk at the Food Shuttle’s office provide the first front-facing service by offering guidance to our guests on where to go and how they can be involved. This is a great opportunity for individual volunteers who are interested or experienced in office administration, as well as for anyone who wants to better understand what it takes to keep a healthy nonprofit running. Tasks might include answering the phone, greeting volunteers, or assisting with mailings or special projects.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please reach out to volunteers@foodshuttle.org or call (919) 390-1968. Ideally, interested volunteers would be able to commit to a regular weekday, morning or afternoon shift on a consistent basis (weekly or every other week) for proper training and execution of responsibilities.
We are extremely grateful for our volunteers that partner with us to help feed and strengthen our community. To view other volunteering opportunities and learn how you can get involved, visit foodshuttle.galaxydigital.com
