The Food Shuttle Helps Prepare Families For an Active Storm Season

This summer, Inter-Faith Food Shuttle will ensure families are better prepared to deal with the impact of what could be an active storm season through the distribution of 1,000 Emergency Preparedness Kits.

On June 18, volunteers from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC and Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation packed Emergency Kits that will be distributed alongside meals served by The Spinning Plate food truck this summer. The Kits are filled with food, water, and supplies that can be used in the event of an emergency such as a hurricane, flood, or snowstorm. Food safety and sanitation and disaster resource information is also included. The Kits are made possible thanks to partners Aetna Medicare, Blue Cross NC, CVS Health, and Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation.

“We’re about empowering our communities and empowering people to take care of themselves,” said L. Ron Pringle, President and CEO of Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. “With these hurricane kits, we’re not just giving people a supply to start with, but also educational material that’s going to be in the box as well, so that they can continue to build upon what we’ve provided.”

The Spinning Plate, one of the Food Shuttle’s newest initiatives to combat food insecurity, has been providing hot, nutritious meals to vulnerable communities since January 2021. To date, the program has served up over 7,000 meals to families, children, and seniors throughout the Food Shuttle’s seven-county service area. In addition to the community meal distributions, The Spinning Plate now stands ready to head out to any area in North and South Carolina impacted by a natural disaster, such as a hurricane, where it will be able to serve up hot meals to first responders, volunteers, and those affected by the crisis.
