Our Back-to-School campaign reminds us that along with pencils and paper, children need a daily supply of food to take on new concepts, run on playgrounds, and socialize more successfully.
Our Community Health and Agriculture Education teams have collaborated to develop the new Food Shuttle Academy, an online learning platform with free, self-paced lessons on health, nutrition, agriculture, and more!
Our Spring Match challenge, made possible by generous funders, including SOLV Energy and the Mead Family Foundation, exceeded the $105,000 goal, raising an additional $70,000 to erase hunger!
Love, Tito’s has a heart for community gardens and increasing access to fresh, healthy foods. Their philanthropic Love, Tito’s Block to Block program, reconnects neighborhoods and creates community gardens and farms throughout the United States. Our hearts are in full bloom knowing that our Camden Street Garden will be the next beneficiary of Block to Block, allowing neighbors with mobility challenges to access our many activities more easily.
The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is launching its new catering company, Horizon Catering, on Thursday, October 4th at 5 PM with a Happy Hour tasting. Horizon Catering uses fresh ingredients purchased from local farmers, often sourced from the Food Shuttle Farm. The Food Shuttle’s Culinary Apprenticeship Program will assist with production of catering orders. No one knows better than Kitty Banks how food can lead to opportunity. Over a decade ago, she was struggling and alone, but IFFS’ Culinary Job Training Program was the second chance she needed. Twelve years later Chef Kitty leads IFFS’ nonprofit catering service, Catering with a Cause. As Kitty says,
“Food is everything… it’s like the olive branch, able to cross many bridges to simply allow me to connect to all different types of people. If a child is mad or having a bad day, I can make them smile with a simple grape. Food is beautiful.”
The Culinary Job Training Program is an eleven-week hands-on program taught by IFFS’ professional chefs and a social worker. Men and women with severe life challenges are prepared for careers in food service by learning in the Food Shuttle commercial kitchen. The program addresses the root causes of hunger by teaching skills for self-sufficiency. Some of the graduates become paid interns who staff Catering with a Cause. All profits are reinvested in the Culinary Job Training Program and other hunger relief programs. Catering with Cause specializes in box lunches, and lunch and dinner buffets, using purchased ingredients from local sources where possible, and fresh vegetables in season from the IFFS Teaching Farm. The following is a letter from Rachael Carpenter, our new Catering Manager, to all friends of the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle! We're very excited to have her -- Get ready to see a lot more of her around town, and consider Catering With A Cause for your next event -- proceeds go to support IFFS's proactive hunger-relief programs! On behalf of the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, Catering With A Cause, I would like to introduce myself as the new Catering Manager. I am very excited to join the team and look forward to helping the Catering Program grow. I was first introduced to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle five years ago through Public Allies, NC. I completed my year of service in 2008 and continued to work at my placement until February of this year. I have a great interest in local food, gardening, and local restaurants and am excited to expand my experience with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle.
Catering With A Cause, CWAC, is a revenue generating catering service staffed by graduates from our Culinary Job Training Program, specializing in breakfast, lunch & desserts. We are happy to provide boxed lunches for the office and extend our services to wedding events. CWAC is a delicious way to profoundly impact the community and offer our graduates an experience to use their newly mastered culinary skills!

Last week was national volunteer week, and Thursday, April 19th, our Catering with a Cause team served up some tasty treats at the reception for the Governor's Commission on Volunteerism & Community Service Awards at the Capitol Building Rotunda in downtown Raleigh! Chef Terri even received compliments from Governor Bev Perdue on the spread as well! Catering with a Cause is a delicious way to impact your community!

You might remember back in November when Will Allen gave a lecture at the CEFS event on sustainable agriculture at the McKimmon Center. Well, now Will Allen, founder and CEO of Growing Power, Inc., is coming back to Raleigh on April 5 and 6 to hold urban farming workshops for students at Longview High School, and kick off Inter-Faith Food Shuttle’s Community Garden at Alliance Medical Ministry! Here's a video about Will Allen and his work with youth and communities for urban agriculture.
On Monday and Tuesday, Will Allen will teach workshops to local students from Longview High School about urban agriculture. Topics will include urban farming, vermiculture composting and intensive gardening. His work with local foods and urban agriculture has inspired communities and organizations across the country and we are thrilled to have him join us in Raleigh on Monday to work with the Longview students!
